You know a technology has really arrived when it has its own conference, so it’s no surprise to see that there’s a conference dedicated to apps today. Apps World takes place at London’s Olympia on 29-30 November, and is accompanied by a free exhibition. On the exhibition floor, there’s a program of sessions, including one from Intel that will reveal how you can make money selling your HTML5 apps.

HTML5 is the latest version of the language that is used to create websites, but it offers such rich options for animation, video and interaction, that it’s increasingly being used to create app experiences. The Intel AppUp developer program is now accepting HTML5 apps, to be sold through the Intel AppUp center, which underlines app stores including the Dixons KnowHow Centre. There’s also a developer challenge running with the best app in each of five categories receiving an Ultrabook, so now is the perfect time to start making HTML5 apps.

The free Intel workshop at Apps World will show you how you can turn your HTML5 code into an app using the Intel AppUp Encapsulator, and how you can submit it to the store. Experts will be on hand to answer your questions, so it’s the perfect opportunity to kick start your future in HTML5 app creation.

Register for your free exhibition pass to get access to this application lab now!

From app developers to product strategists, the pendulum swings widely on whether engaging consumers via their mobile device should be a mobile web or native app experience. Ultimately, when it comes to consumer facing products the decision does need to be based on the most effective way to connect your consumers to your product and to understand where the market is – because that is where the consumer will be found.

If one positions the consumer at the beginning of the equation, these are the questions that should be considered:

- Do you want the consumer to connect to the product via their mobile device?

- Do you want that connection experience to be rich in content, graphic interface and other media?

- Does the context of the product require access to the native device features such as GPS, camera, calendar, contacts or accelerometer?

- Are convenience, ease-of-use and access in both an online and offline world important to the user experience?

- Is a mobile commerce solution, where payments and other sensitive information exist, necessary to the context of the product?

The consumer experience is central to the decision on how you’re going to use mobile to engage.

This is not to say that the company or developer is not important to the equation. Costs, development time, scalability, agility, ease of distribution and faster time to market are all important to generating effective results for consumer mobile interaction. However, with so many unique ideas of how the mobile experience can be optimized for both parties, is there a “one-size-fits-all” solution?

Looking at the facts, we know that 77% of the world’s population are mobile subscribers. A half a billion people accessed the Internet with their mobile device in 2009 and there are well over 1 million apps on the global app market (http://mobithinking.com/mobile-marketing-tools/latest-mobile-stats). Thus, it goes without saying that if you are a brand, retailer, or have some type of product or service that is consumer facing, you need to focus on a mobile strategy.

The app market is deeply saturated. There are numerous device platforms that need to be considered and “app store” approvals, updates and distribution can be cumbersome. On the other hand, tapping into the native capabilities of smartphone devices delivers an optimal user experience in that all of the phone’s PIM tools (personal information management) and other utilities become part of the app experience.

Use the accelerometer to map your route to that brand new Italian bistro. Send your restaurant reservations and directions to your calendar. Watch a movie trailer and purchase movie tickets. Share your location via Facebook, Twitter, Email, Foursquare and Google+, all with outhaving to leave the app.

It does seem that the price paid for such a rich user experience is a fragmented market. This can be a barrier to entry for startups and young developers. Investing in such diverse development team skills is resource intensive. The mobile web does seem enticing as a common platform.

But back to the pendulum and where the consumers are. iOS and the iTunes App store have been the biggest game changers of the millennium, and these only paved the way for Android, now over-taking iPhone growth. Mobile web apps do not have the same buy-in from app stores who at this point are ruling the roost on discoverability of mobile content.

As a company seeking a mobile marketing strategy, how do you compete with so many apps? How do you distinguish yourself from what might feel like a “me-too” approach. How do you get to the “there’s an app for that” stage?

This comes down to strategy and tactics. Seeking partnerships and content aggregators that help do the heavy lifting in order for your products and services to get in front of the right eyeballs, is one way that consumer product strategists and marketers need to approach this problem. Go to where there is a market and do your part to ensure that you have designed your product experience for a mobile audience.

But the debate remains, “if apps are seen by some as the golden egg, is HTML5 then the savior?” Is HTML5 the “common platform” that mobile web needs?

As Apple and iOS championed the “App,” Google can be said to be driving the mobile web with HTML 5 – making a content rich experience for the mobile web. But alas, we are still in the “wild west” with the web as there isn’t a unified standard. Enthusiastic developers are running at different paces. The idea of the “native app” experience has been embraced by organizations such as WC3 along with companies such as Phonegap, with its Java rich toolkit, but it’s still in its infancy.

This amusing website – http://www.ishtml5readyyet.com/ – brilliantly reflects the frustrations of those that have been waiting for HTML5 to save the day.

The mobile web app still requires the Internet for access and we are a long way from the ubiquity of “anywhere” connectivity, despite free WiFi experiments in select cities such as London, San Francisco and New York. Banking and secure information transactions just barely live comfortably in the closed environment of a native app.

Ultimately winning over the hearts and minds of the consumer is about being where they are, and, to be honest, they are both on the web and nestled in the comfort of their device. A balanced strategy, though some might consider still resource intensive, would allow both consumers and companies to get the best from both worlds. The secret sauce is really about building an outstanding experience for the consumer, regardless of which mobile interaction they choose.

You can register for your free pass here to meet Poynt and hear more about this exciting platform. VP Philip Gontier from Poynt will also be speaking as part of the Marketing & Monetisation track on 30thNovember at 3pm.

You can come along to stand 81a to meet Layar and hear about the largest content catalogue with more than 3,000 layers.

The app aims to bring impactful augmented reality experiences into people’s everyday lives and was named as a 2011 Technology Pioneer by the World Economic Forum and received a Meffy Mobile Entertainment Award in 2010 for Technology Innovation. Layar recently worked with Linda magazine to add additional content in the form of digital buttons to over 50 pages in the magazine, which could then be revealed using a smartphone. The content included unique backstage video footage of the cover shoot, one click to sites selling the fashion featured in the articles, and book test drives for the advertised cars. Check out the video with Linda here.

Layar is available for download in the App Store and Android Market and is already installed on more than 10 million mobile devices, offering brands and publishers an extensive reach across multiple platforms.

You can register here for a chance to meet Layar at the Apps World expo

Android 3 SDK Programming For Dummies provides the perfect solution for readers who already know how to program and just want to know about programming in the Android environment and the ins and outs of the latest Android SDK. The book then goes through the process of building the application, creating the emulator, and running the application.
While we haven’t really yet seen the TV Apps trend take off into the stratosphere like we’ve been expecting, there’s little doubt in the industry that when connected TV hits the mainstream, it’s going to usher in a seismic industry shakeup.

At Apps World Europe at London Olympia on 29-30 November, we’re dedicating a whole day’s conference track to the subject of TV apps, answering key burning questions, including where is the industry headed; who’s driving growth; what does it mean for developers, broadcasters, operators and marketers; and who will be left holding all the cards when the dust finally settles?

AppsWorld Blog caught up with a man who has a better insight into these questions than most, Andy Eardley, director of the international TV app development specialist company, The TV App Agency. They specialise in cross platform software and app development and app store submission, helping businesses get onto connected TV.

How big an impact will TV apps make on the industry?

Eardley explains how the consumer will be able to define what they want to watch and when, with catch up TV on demand soon to be accessible. “They are very few apps out there for connected TV at the moment,” he says. “But this is going to be a huge revolution as we’re going to get consumers new content available.

“It’s really going to shake up TV and the whole broadcast space in the same way that apps are shaking up the mobile phone world.”

Eardley’s top TV app challenges for developers

Fragmentation – Different operating systems released each year means your app will have to be updated each time to suit.

Approval – Getting your app approved could take as long as a month, as each TV manufacturer has its own process to go through.

Top tips for TV app strategy

Shared experiences – Defining whether your app is ‘personal’ or ‘shared’ will help your strategy into which device to work with. Images and video tend to be seen as a shared experience, which belongs on a TV. Ensure that the content is what people want and if it looks good on TV.

Experience – Don’t make your app too big to begin with or focus on the end result. Build up the app, start with version one and get it live on TV. You can then improve your app as you start to get data and work on version two, three and so on.

Examples – Ask people for examples to see if they can build TV apps before working with them. Many people know how to build apps but very few are doing it, so have a look at what they can do.

Efficience – Find out what tools are available to make your app accessible on a multitude of platforms, because apps need to be developed for large access.

Businesses can use TV apps to market and monetise their brand or products. It gives them the ability to build their own TV channel, and potentially open up premium subscriptions. Once consumers have used a free app, businesses can give them the opportunity to upgrade and pay for a premium app. In-app purchases are also looking to be a big opportunity, where sectors can promote services within the app, and consumers can make purchases through the app.

“Each manufacturer has a different operating system released each year, and that’s one of the biggest challenges that developers will find,” says Eardley. “They’ll look at it and think they have to develop their app for all these different devices: how do I resolve this and get my head around all these? This is one of the things we’ve solved and we’ll talk about it at Apps World”

If you want to learn more about the benefits to be gained from the TV apps trend, Andy Eardley will be appearing at Apps World Europe on 29-30 November alongside a host of experts representing some of the industry’s leading brands. For more information on how to attend, visit the Apps World website.

There’s just a couple of days to go until Apps World North America 2011 kicks off in New York, featuring leading brands and developers from across the apps spectrum, brands, businesses and app store operators, all preparing to get together for two days of industry insight, practical advice and top-level networking.
We caught up with two of the show’s speakers, two guys who also happen to be leading app development specialists, to see what advice they could offer for aspiring developers ahead of the apps industry bonanza that is Apps World NY 2011.

Mark Sigal, co-founder and chief product officer at one of the app industry’s most successful developer companies, Unicorn Labs, producers of a number of successful apps and eBooks to the Apple App Store.

Thomas Chung VP, GM at The Playforge, mobile game specialists and makers of the hugely popular ZombieLife and ZombieFarm iOS apps.

The creative process behind developing great apps

Mark and his team at Unicorn take a systematic approach when they first hit the drawing board, getting stuck in right away to the serious analytical work; first of all they look into what kind of app types and user experiences are currently engaging people in the App Store.

“This is a process of looking at rankings, reading reviews both within the app store and across the web and downloading and playing with a bunch of different apps,” he says; which culminates in a ‘de-composition exercise,’ where core building blocks are broken down schematically into container functions, complete with workflows that will serve as ingredients for new application ‘recipes.’

This, in turn, leads to a building up of 3-5 high-level narrative cases of the primary jobs, outcomes and constraints that the target application could address, followed by storyboard and wire-framing of the application screens based on a workflow codification model that the team calls “starting in the middle.”

At The Playforge, Thomas Chung says that their philosophy is based around making games that they would want to play themselves. CEO Vince McDonnell came up with the idea of Zombie Farm by combining two of his favourite games from around 2009.

“If you’ll recall Farmville and Plants versus Zombies were both really popular at the time,” says Chung. “Vince didn’t start out trying to make a smash hit. He was making a game that combined some of the favourite elements of games he was really into at the time and thought would be fun to play.”

At Unicorn, Sigal believes that there’s no substitute for having frequent alpha and beta builds, which everyone, including target users, get to play with. The team also holds recurring alignment meetings with their clients and a operate share project management sandbox. “This ensures that course corrections can be made incrementally, and in real time,” he says. “It’s the single best way to avoid feature creep, missed delivery dates and miscommunication.”

Challenging times for developers: Pricing and discovery

The market can be a tough and unforgiving place for developers to operate in at the minute. The biggest challenge that developers face in terms of the way that the market operates today are two-fold, says Sigal.

“One is that the app store models are fundamentally optimized to drive pricing to 99 cents or less, which is a hard model to build something other than a lifestyle business around
“The second is that there is such a surplus of apps that discovery is a real challenge,” he adds. “And the lifecycle durability of an app, from a revenue generation perspective, is lower than in the days of packaged software.”

Chung is in total agreement here: “With over half a million applications in the App Store today the big question is: How do you get your application discovered?” he says. “I think the destinations or applications that will win out in the end are the ones that focus on a unique value proposition or are differentiated in the quality of content.”

Mark Sigal’s two most obvious approaches to maximizing discovery are:

1)	Segmenting your product into full ‘paid’ version and a lite ‘free’ version, so you maximize downloads and can focus on conversion to paid.

2)	Creating a storefront around your application, where the user downloads a base application that is free, and via in-app purchase can augment and extend the application via filters, new content or wholly new application capabilities.

“This second approach has the added benefit in that it creates an installed base, aggregates your download counts from a ranking perspective, and provides a better means to touch users with new marketing messages every time you upgrade your apps,” he adds. “Also, don’t underestimate the importance of cultivating strong relationships with the segment specific personnel at Apple, Google and Amazon.”

Neglect marketing and PR at your peril

If you simply build it, they won’t necessarily come. Don’t assume that once you’re in the store that that hard work is done. The biggest shift in developer mindset with regard to app development has been that these are app services now. “With so much disposable content out there today, to be successful in the long term these apps require ongoing support,” says Chung. “That goes for everything from community management, to development to marketing and pr.”

“Find a concentration of users fitting your target market, and get to work,” he adds. “As with the development process, it’s important to have goals, targets, budgets, timeframe, and an approach or methodology.”

But who are your PR targets? Make sure you’ve done your homework on who exactly it is you need to hit from a PR perspective. Who are the influential blogger? Who are the key journalists, review sites, important vertical communities?

“Make sure you know what assets you need to have handy so that when you reach out to prospects, you have already done the hard work for them,” advises Sigal.

This might include a screen capture of your application, a pithy, one paragraph blurb on your app and why it matters and a 45-90 second video trailer that showcases your app in action; and of course, promo codes. Bear in mind that you need your best PR prospects to be able to seamlessly interact with you app and its associated promotional materials.

At Unicorn, Mark Sigal says they always feel it’s important to have a clear social media strategy. “This is inclusive of what nuggets you are sharing, with what frequency and how you plan to leverage the various core services to cast your breadcrumbs efficiently,” he says.

“Candidly, you want this process at least nominally baked before you start building the product, as the product itself can deliver payloads to your target social sites that will enable your user base to do some of the viral uplift work for you,” he adds. “If you can’t think of a compelling PR story on the front-end, you’re likely to have challenges evangelizing your product on the back.

“Good product management anticipates product marketing at the inception stage.”

Mark Sigal and Thomas Chung are both appearing at Apps World North America at the Javits Center in New York on 1-2 November. The event features a free to attend developer workshop, featuring both Mark and Thomas, plus a whole host of industry experts, leading brands, developers and operators.
