How to add augmented reality into your app

By Taras Filatov, founder, QuickBlox

Augmented Reality (AR) is a new content delivery and engagement technology which gets more and more applications every day.

ProjectGlass by Google is looking to take AR to a new level by bringing travel, social and other useful information right to users’ eyes with a piece of neat hardware as simple as glasses.

While Google Glasses will take time to become affordable and grow a developers’ ecosystem around it, there is a wide variety of smartphone apps featuring Augmented Reality and this number is growing every day.

It seems therefore that AR is going to be one of the prevailing technology trends in 2013. Businesses, indie publishers and developers are often wondering what the ways are to employ Augmented Reality.

Essentially, AR is just a way to deliver content and technically how it works in mobile apps is you take a camera view of the devices and overlay markers around the user matching them to their real world locations using a compass.

Still this requires certain technology both in the app and server-side which is the reason why there are a number of AR enabling platforms already.

MoSync shows #HTML5 can survive and thrive in native app land

According to Ali Sarrafi, product evangelist and community manager at Swedish open-source tools company MoSync, HTML5 can survive and thrive in native app territory.

“One reason for web developers to want to go into the mobile app ecosystem in the first place is that there’s no straightforward way for a mobile website to be discovered and to make money on it from users. Therefore, the suggested path is to create a so-called hybrid app (mixing web technology with native mobile code) which can be offered for download in an app store.

“If you’re a web developer creating mobile apps for the first time, you are however typically faced with some new challenges,” he said.

“If you want to develop a hybrid app that works on the widest range possible of devices and platforms, you normally need to use multiple native SDKs to produce the final application package. You have to develop your code, build it again and again, transfer it to the device, and see if it works or not. (more…)
