Windows 8 Developer Workshops : There’s only a few weeks until Apps World kicks off in San Francisco on 7-8 February at the Moscone Centers, and Microsoft is hosting a series of Windows 8 free to attend expert briefings and developer workshops over the two days, aimed at delivering the knowledge you require to code high quality apps and games for its innovative new operating system.

A team of Windows and Windows Phone experts will be on hand throughout the event to answer your queries, offer assistance with porting and development and all the support you’ll need to create amazing W8 apps

Workshops will include advice on how to ensure your apps generate the stickiness that keeps downloads ticking over, rather than fading into obscurity. They’ll be examining how to use Visual Studio, C# and XAML to build Windows Phone 8 Apps, and demonstrating how easy it is to port games to Windows Phone. (more…)

TV App developers will be heading to the Moscone West on 7 & 8 of February for the free TV Hackfest taking place as part of Apps World, agile web evangelist Moovweb has just been announced as a sponsor of the two day hackathon.

Apps World is pleased to announce the Intel Enterprise App Developers Theatre at the San Francisco event on February 7-8, which runs for both days and examines various developer opportunities with Intel’s software tools.

Enterprise applications are of course a hugely lucrative and profitable space, with issues such as bring your own device (BYOD), mobile device management (MDM) and enterprise mobility impacting the vast majority of workplaces. But what of how the apps are developed, and the best practice surrounding it? The Intel Developers Theatre will try to shed light on the issues surrounding enterprise app development, in particular how to engage the developer community and how to quickly build mobile-ready back ends.

So that’s the Apps World London live show for another year, thanks to everyone who came down, took part, got involved or even followed the event remotely.

Many thanks to all our exhibitors and sponsors for enabling us to put on our biggest ever show. The numbers are in and we’ve had almost 6000 visitors through the door this year, and you’ve helped Apps World cement its place as one of the foremost European apps industry events. We’ve heard some fascinating talks, presentations and workshops across ten conference tracks, covering everything from TV apps, mobile marketing and game development, to enterprise mobility, mobile payment and operator app strategies. The free-to-attend developer tracks were packed on both days, with the HTML5 track proving particularly popular.

In previous years you would’ve had to wait a full twelve months before your next slice of Apps World action, but this year we’re making the majority of sessions available to paid delegates as downloadable podcasts, enabling you to enjoy first class industry advice and insight all year round. There will be additional streamed content to come via our partners.

There was another awesome first this year, as we held the inaugural Appsters Awards, complete with TV comedian host and vodka ice luge, at the sumptuous Kensington Roof Gardens on Tuesday night. Judged by a crack team of industry experts, the Appsters whittled down over 250 nominees to a shortlist of 70, and finally winners in 12 categories.

Congratulations to all the winners, and particularly to Bristol-based developer Mubaloo, who scooped both Best Developer and the overall Appsters Champion 2012 award. The after party was a cracker, the dancing was borderline illegal and we suspect there may have been some sore heads on the conference floor this morning. Well done you troopers! Web designers are doing amazing things with responsive design techniques thanks largely to CSS Media Queries, but when creating intelligent, cross-platform, device-independent app displays, CSS can only get you so far.

That’s according to Brightcove Inc. Developer Advocate Adam Mark.

Here he discusses and gives code examples in terms of responsive web design with orientation, device and operating system based functionality:

With only days until Apps World on 2-3 October, which means we’re agonisingly close to learning who the first ever Appsters Awards winners will be.

Our judging panel has been over 70 finalists across twelve industry categories. The judging team has been tirelessly scoring, comparing and contrasting the highly varied field, based on their interpretation of a number of key factors involving strategic objectives, innovation, feasibility and measurements of success.

There’s been laughter, tears, heated debate and lots of coffee. But as we near the end of the process, excitement is building towards the Awards ceremony on 2 October at the Kensington Roof Gardens. (more…)
