A recent poll conducted by learning and mobile technology firm Redware amongst staff revealed interesting findings about the changes in mobile phone usage since the nineties and highlights some of the most popular apps today.

Nearly half of staff surveyed were the proud owners of a Nokia from the mid nineties onwards, with models such as the 3210 being popular.  A handful also owned a Motorola or a Sony Ericsson.  Today that’s changed significantly with the dawn of the smartphone with users owning an iPhone, Blackberry or HTC handset.

Whilst early mobile phones meant that people became available anytime and anywhere to receive calls and people could get access to answers and information on the go, today staff see the main purpose of their mobile and smart phones as being very different.  Email, music, social media and children’s games were the most commons uses today.  In the nineties users revelled in the fact that they didn’t have to be at home to take a call, could make social plans via text and could pose to impress the girls with their new gadgets! Far from taking a well earned summer break, the Apps World team is gearing up for its next major event, Apps World Asia, in Singapore on 1-2 September, preparing to examine apps industry growth, consumer apps marketing and app development in the region.

The Asian apps landscape is one with its own very unique challenges, but also vast opportunities, with unparalleled 3G and broadband access in some areas.

The organisers of Social Media World Forum & Apps World Africa have teamed up with Nokia to deliver a new and attractive way for attendees to connect with each other.

To start with, they’ve unveiled their TwitterWall design ahead of the Cape Town show next week, on 1-2 June. This will be projected onto a huge screen inside the conference, pulling in all tweets around the two show hashtags.

This means anyone tweeting into the #SMWF and #AppsWorld hashtags will see their tweet blown up to massive proportions.

However, as part of their efforts to ensure that delegates are able to make valuable connections with the right people across the apps and social media industries, the organisers have made available a raft of real-time statistics and info-graphics displaying information on the shows’ top tweeters, their networks, their connections, reach and influence.
